Republicans and the Border Wall: Fear Trumps Facts

January 16th, 2019 by

It is logical to assume that when people use the word “crises” they referring to a big problem.  Since 2010, unauthorized immigration has been dropping drastically, and only about 38% of the unauthorized immigrants entered the country illegally and not all come over the Southern border.

Of course, the size of a problem is a matter of perception. Right now, the U.S. government is partially shut down because the Resident President has convinced some people that “there is a crisis on our southern border.”  He and a band of dilatory Senators are holding the country hostage so that the taxpayers will fund “the Great Wall of Arizona.”

Most people are against the idea, but a significant number support it.  Who are the supporters, who are against it?

Pew Research helps us find the answer to the question.

Well more than half, 58%, don’t think the wall is a good idea while 40% do (about the same number who perpetually think that T*mp is doing a good job.).

Not only are the majority of people opposed to the wall, but those that are opposed are also far less likely to change their position.  88% say that it is unacceptable to pass a budget with money for the wall, while 72% of the people that want the wall find it unacceptable to pass a budget without money for the wall.  That means that more than half would find a budget that funds a wall unacceptable, but just over a quarter wouldn’t go along with passing a budget that doesn’t fund the wall.

You are less likely to want the wall if you are younger; better educated; not-white; doing OK financially.  People who are the most in favor of the wall are usually in places where it will have almost no impact.

What mother who watched her 12-year-old kill himself wants you to know | KSDK.com

Almost 15 years have passed since Patti Colbath walked into her backyard and saw her 12-year-old son Max put a handgun to his forehead and pull the trigger. It hasn’t gotten any easier, she said, no matter what people say about time healing all wounds. It’s just not true.“I’m not doing well, and I’m going to tell you very honestly, I have a couple of drinks every night, and there have been times when I have said very mean things to my husband,” Patti said.

The meanest thing: “If you hadn’t left the gun out, Max wouldn’t be dead.”

With Little Fanfare, Mexican Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage – The New York Times

Now the folks in Indiana, Alabama and so on are going to have to change their tune about immigrants. They will have to take in refugees who flee Mexico so they won’t have to be around married gay people.

Hiram Gonzalez, center, married Severiano Chavez in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where gay marriage is technically illegal.

MEXICO CITY — His church turned him away, his family discouraged him from a public fight and the government of the state where he lives vowed it would never happen. But it did. Hiram Gonzalez married his boyfriend, Severiano Chavez, last year in the northern state of Chihuahua, which, like most Mexican states, technically allows marriage only between a man and a woman.Mr. Gonzalez and dozens of other gay couples in recent months have, however, found a powerful ally: Mexico’s Supreme Court. In ruling after ruling, the court has said that state laws restricting marriage to heterosexuals are discriminatory. Though the decisions have been made to little public fanfare, they have had the effect of legalizing gay marriage in Mexico without enshrining it in law.

Court declines to suspend U.S. net neutrality rules | Reuters

June 12th, 2015 by

Here is some great news. Net neutrality makes it so that Comcast can’t charge extra for Netflix traffic. It is interesting that if they did this it would be almost exactly what Rockefeller and other robber barons did that lead to the anti-trust laws. They owned the railroads so they would charge competitors extra to ship their goods. That guaranteed that they would be able to have lower prices for the same thing, effectively wiping out the competitors.

New U.S. Internet traffic regulations, known as net neutrality rules, will go into effect on Friday after a federal appeals court rejected the telecommunications industry’s request to partly suspend

Louisiana School Defends Using the Bible to ‘Present Alternative Viewpoints’ When Teaching Evolution

June 11th, 2015 by

Louisiana it one of one the most religious states  in the country (#4)  and also one of the poorest.  It seems it is determined to stay that way. What an awful thing to do to the poor kids.  This might be the kind of thing that is causing the rapid decline in people associating themselves with Christianity.

A Louisiana school district is speaking out in defense of teachers who use the Bible “to present alternative viewpoints” when teaching on evolution, despite claims from secular scientists that teaching Creationism is “unconstitutional and scientifically-misleading.”

Josh Rosenau, spokesperson for the National Center for Science Education, a nonprofit that promotes the teaching of evolution in schools, asserted on the group’s website that “one in eight high school biology teachers advocate for Creationism, even though it’s ‘unconstitutional,'” in response reports that some teachers in Bossier Parish Schools based in Benton, Louisiana, are using the Bible when teaching on evolution.

Rosenau’s comments were a reaction to an article in the left-leaning Slate magazine that reportedly acquired emails from faculty in Bossier Parish wherein a science teacher was said to be teaching about Creationism in the classroom and using materials that included the Bible.

One such email from science teacher Shawna Creamer to principal Jason Rowland at Airline High School allegedly said: “We will read in Genesis and them [sic] some supplemental material debunking various aspects of evolution from which the students will present.”
